There are many things to know when deciding on and purchasing your first pontoon. The information below will get you started in the right direction however Massimo Marine encourages you to get in touch with our sales team so they can guide you into deciding on the right pontoon boat for you and in the right price range that fits your budget.

  • What does a day on the water look for me?
  • What is most important to you and other decision makers?
    • Fishing?
    • Watersports?
    • Going fast or just cruising?
    • Throwing an anchor and hanging out with friends?
  • What is my budget?
  • Do I have a place to store it?
  • Used pontoon boat prices have recently been at an all-time high
      • Used boats are selling for higher prices than original MSRP sticker.
  • New pontoon boats will come with full warranties

How to Pontoon

First-time Boat Owner Checklist

This varies state to state but typically if there is a lien on the boat then the bank will require the vessel to be insured.

Massimo Marine has trailers that come with the purchase of your pontoon boat. One of our team members will be able to assist you with the connection of the trailer to your vehicle as well as give you tips on how to drive with a trailer in tow.

  • You don’t want to get to the ramp and not know how to back up a trailer!
  • This is best to do on a weekday while the ramp tends to be less crowded
  •  
  • Are you going to store the boat on trailer out of the water or in a slip on the water?
    • Most HOA’s will not let you park boats in driveways for extended periods of time.
    • There are plenty of options when it comes to boat storage. You will have to consider dry storage over in-slip storage.
  • Know dangers of the prop 
  • Know if the boat is powered by jet intake or prop
    • Three different kind of recreational outdrives
      • Outboard
      • Inboard/outboard 
      • Inboard.
    •  
  • Life jackets for everyone on board
  • A fire extinguisher that is up-to-date and properly functioning 
  • A throwable 
  • A working horn or whistle 
  • Navigation and anchor lights
  • A paddle 
    • Never know when you may need this!
    • Look into getting a membership with BOATUS
  • A flare gun
  • Ropes – dock lines and fender lines
  • This will ensure that no critical items are left on land
  • Let someone know your plan that is not going out on the water with you.
